Are gutters optional?

June 13, 2010 by Ken Rutter

All LeavesOut dealers understand that properly working gutters protect the most valuable asset many people have…their home.   Some homeowners have gotten so tired of cleaning clogged gutters that they have taken the gutters off their house and think that solves the problem.  However, this creates new and potentially more serious problems.  The concentration of rain falling off the edge of the roof not only causes washout of soil and vegetation around the foundation, but leads to damp basements and crawl spaces.  Termites thrive and colonize where the ground is wet.  The added moisture around the house with no gutters encourages termite nesting.  The termites will then construct tunnels from the ground up the foundation and to the wood.  Our discussions with Terminix confirms that the termite problem around houses is greatly reduced when there is a proper rain carrying system on the structure.
